So Kabuto, even before he absorbed some of orochimaru flesh, was considered to be strong.. Yet he somehow lost to Naruto (the earlier episodes).

He lost because he really underestimated naruto and never thought he would be able to master a technique like rasengan. Also naruto almost died fighting kabuto he cut his heart muscles

If anything I’m impressed Kabuto survived Rasengan in that fight. Also, Hatake Kakashi remarked on Kabuto being able to escape him.
