With the airing of Shippuuden episode 54, the series featured a new opening which revealed 5 new filler characters. Episode 54 ended with the start of this new filler arc. Before one has an aneurism, note that we don’t know how long this filler will last or how involved it will be. It appears some portion of the canon material will continue in the episodes. It could be 7-8 episodes or a lot longer. Originally in the manga, there was a period here where it was a natural fit for filler. So it’s no surprise Studio Pierrot is using this opportunity. It’s also unclear what this filler will exactly deal with, however, manga only readers will know that certain events transpire which could be addressed in the filler to answer issues about an unknown Jinchuuriki (See Unknown Jinchuuriki Three in our Jinchuuriki Guide if you don’t mind the spoilers) or highlight a certain character before he disappears from the series. Whether the arc will feature these two things is unclear, here’s hoping for the best though. Also, the filler portions may be about something else entirely and not a Jinchuuriki, so don’t get your hopes up.
Feel free to use the Comments area for discussion on both the anime and manga related issues on this topic. So spoilers are allowed. Do not use the episode 53 and 54 topic to discuss manga spoilers. Thank you.
As requested in the comments, let’s get Zabuza’s take:
I’m not surprised, that’s always Zabuza’s take.

Oh and since it looked like there was a temple that might mean that the konaha 11 were there and Asuma used to be part of them wich only leads me to beleive that Kakuza and Heiden will be there and it will lead to that arc when Asuma dies.

Actually from the looks of the intro and what i’ve seen of the Japanese trailers for it. This ark looks like it could be a part of “Naruto Shippuuden the Movie” as the trailers put it. at least the extra characters look like those in the movie trailers. either way. looks like it could be interesting. Either the one kid Naruto was dreaming about is another jinchuuriki or its someone who had the kyuubi in them before naruto (unless its the Hachibi)

Hmm, this new filler seems interesting. Well, it seems like one of those plots you’d see in the movies, I just hope that it will have a good chance to introduce all the new characters, and have their skills seen before their killed straight off. (Hint hint, Sasori//Kakuzu…they got one fight, one freaking fight, then someone Gods their way to killing them. >,>…)
Well, I hope that this will actually help with the plot, and not just take up 20 Episodes to get done when it could’ve been in 10. (Orochimaru walking back to the bridge…it took, like, 8 minutes or something.)

Well that’s not entirely true…
From what I have seen, next episode shows the start of Naruto’s training. Perhaps a little Jinchuuriki side story included that’s nothing to panic about.
I say stay calm…..

I think that this part of the story is a segment that includes the story behind the nibi(second jinchuriki) that has to do with that kind of scenery.this is sort of a sidestory

I’m afraid on what with will gonna happen to the Hidden Leaf(Konoha) now. I saw in the new opening that the whole village is being burned…

im not suprised. after all the anime is so fast to reach manga thats why they do this. sadly to say we have to obey.

Ah… it’s a shame there’s gonna be fillers again, I checked and the manga’s about 100 chapters ahead of the anime. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about in respect of the anime catching up with the manga. I was really looking forward to the next arc too.
I just wished they would have played Kakashi Gaiden, that would have been a nice intermission from the storyline… oh well. I just hope the fillers are good and like many before me have said, explains more about Asuma and his past and present before, well you know… yea

Let me ask you all a very important question. Would you rather have filler or nothing at all?
Now, you might be tempted to say nothing at all. You’re wrong.
Without the filler, the anime has to wait until the manga has progressed far enough ahead that the animators can actually animate the series. You can’t do that if a manga chapter is only half of an episode (like i usually is).
So, you’ll have to wait at least two weeks between each episode once the anime catches up to the manga. Sometimes it may be even longer. Who knows? But imagine, a month between episodes? It could get that bad, for all you know.
That’s what’s good about filler. It allows the manga to get far enough ahead of the anime so that when the real episodes start coming out, the whole story ark is unbroken. I mean, what would you think the public’s reaction would be if a filler arc just randomly started during the Kakuzu and Hidan fight?
Now, I’m not saying that all filler is good. Some of it really sucks. But you know what the best part about filler is? You don’t have to watch it if you don’t want to. And, if you do skip it, you won’t miss anything from the storyline.
So watch it or don’t watch it. Your choice. Just don’t whine about it and spoil it for everyone else.

I’m not gonna front at times the fillers are mad random to what happens in the show, like when Sasuke got healed and then I think the next episode came out of nowhere with Kakashi’s mask, that was random like hell, but then again with little fillers like that it kind of puts in a bit of a funny/good mood to what’s going on. But everyone’s opinion is diffrent, btw, i almost cried with the whole Gaara memory thing, so sad xD

at the end of the episode they show a preview for the next ep…..it looks like naruto is finding out what kind of element/chakra thing he is..and that whole waterfall training thing.. thats what happens after dont it.. if i remember correctly….
April 11th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
i meant to say , thats what supposed to happen.
its confusing why tthey are mixing things up..
April 14th, 2008 at 7:28 am
me thinks this filler will focus on Asuma, the unknown Jinchuuriki, and Gaara.. Seeing how he is included in the ending music.. They’re probably going to insert some Gaara goodies before they permanently eliminate him from the whole series..

Honestly, the way they’re doing filler in Shippuuden is degrading the overall quality of Part 2…
Too many scenes of Naruto lookin’ at Sai lookin’ at Orochimaru lookin’ at Naruto- for like 30 seconds each. And Naruto flashing back to when he was flashing back… It is what it is, but in some of these episodes there’s about 10 minutes of actual content.
I’d rather them run it the way they did in the first part. They need to keep the filler content out of the non-filler episodes. Naruto is good, but if they keep watering it down so much it’ll be just another anime. So, this filler arc is welcome…
LOL @ the dub-watchers being on the Laiga filler arc now…

I for one hope that after this filler arc is over, the anime’s pace would increase back to normal. But if they do give extra character development to Asuma it would be great.

Anything that gets us more screen time for Hinata, Shikamaru, Rock Lee, Neji, Shino Azuma/Kurenai, etc is a good thing in my book.
Shikamaru is one of the few characters where I like the dubbed english voice better than the original japanese. I really like the english Sakura voice as well. Great casting there.
